COMMUNITY LIBRARY

A convenient and comfortable learning environment

The Kibera Community Library opened its doors to the public in September 2012. The library has since grown to become the main resource and education center for both young and older residents of Kibera.

Our Vision is to pursue a peaceful, healthy and active society, where each individual participates in order to assure the dignity and respect for human rights and the equal sustainable sharing of resources.

The library, which spawned from a partnership between KNLS and Practical Action, is funded by the Alistair Berkley Charitable Trust.

The library is housed within a two storey structure; and so far it is the first level being used while the second one is nearing completion.  The first level is broken up into sections for both adults and children, with other sections designated for borrowing books, storage, and internet usage.

What the library is to Kibera

The Kibera Community Library offers a convenient and comfortable learning environment for anyone seeking information resources in Kibera. People looking for information will find a quiet space within the building, but they are also allowed to borrow the books.

The facility offers an ever growing range of reading material that is either purchased by KNLS or donated by well-wishers. This is especially important for the school-going children in the area who constantly suffer from a lack of information resources as well as the space needed to use the resources.

Occasionally,  there are instances when a library user may be unable to find a particular book that they are looking for. Mary explains that in these circumstances, the facility reaches out to one of the other 59 KNLS libraries around Kenya and borrows that particular book for that person or school. This sharing system ensures that information is always available for library users in Kibera and the rest of the country.

OUR VISION

To pursue a peaceful, healthy and active society, where each individual participates in order to assure the dignity and respect for human rights and the equal sustainable sharing of resources.
